The impressive successes of Deep Learning in the domains of data mining, robotic perception, and content generation have generated a hype around AI of a magnitude never seen before. Although a great thing for the AI community in general, the excitation over these results tend to overshadow more than 60 years of research in the other fields of AI. However, from the point of view of a business man that needs AI solution available today, many of these techniques are still relevant. From an academic point of view, some of the most impressive successes of AI were obtained by mixing both Deep Learning and more classical AI. In this talk, we will give a quick survey of the different AI paradigms available today, stress their respective strength and weaknesses. Then we will claim that, for many practical situations, the key is to intelligently decompose the problem and then use the right approach in the right place.

DEPENDABLE AND EXPLAINABLE LEARNING (DEEL) FOR CRITICAL APPLICATIONS AND FUNCTIONS

Beyond spectacular success of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in several fields, applying it more widely on critical functions or systems in Aeronautics, Space, terrestrial transportation, etc. needs further work. The ambition is to mature AI technologies and related processes up to the point they can be qualified or certified. IRT Saint Exupéry recently launched an integrated collaborative R&T program named DEEL for DEpendable and Explainable AI. It gathers industrial experts and engineers, data scientists, and fundamental researchers to identify and solve scientific and engineering challenges related to AI for critical systems. This will be done in close connection with IVADO and CRIAQ in Montreal, as well as with ANITI, the Toulouse proposal for an AI Institute (3IA). We will show how this extended open innovation can accelerate the whole innovation cycle ranging from fundamental research to actual application of AI from autonomous cars to Aerospace and beyond.
